Brief 3 - Ocean Giants Evaluation
This projet was a bit of a learning curve for me as I had never produced a full book. Although the layout of the book works I don't feel its the strongest design I have ever done. There is far more exciting and innovative layout out there and I don't think this would keep up with the competition. Saying that the target audience for the book won't be looking for innovative layout, they would be interested in the photography and facts about the animals which I think I communicated well. The info graphics with in the book tie it all together and make the whole publication a success. I think this brief has improved my layout and infographic skills which is why I wanted to do this brief in the first place.

Sleeve Design.
Final design for sleeve to be printed. The design is a good way of showing the ocean but not a certain type of whale or dolphin.

Poster
As part of my range I have designed a poster that people could put on their wall. It is similar to the Blue whale information graphic but with more information and detail like the world map in the background.

Cover design
I added a quick explanation the supplement which I felt it need if it did fall out of the paper. I also made the colour a smaller strip to give the image more impact.
Supplements Design
I gave white space to the design to reflect the book cover design. I also made the chapter colours smaller and gave a little information on whats "inside"

Final Book
This is the final book. I think I have done well with creating a contemporary book design that would entertain, educate and amaze people about whales.

Supplements
As part of my brief I want to design the covers of supplements that would be part of a weekly realise to promote the release of the book or programme. The supplements would come with the theguardian. I have tried to involve the colours of the different chapters in the book which the supplement would give a taster of.
Ocean Giants Front Cover
Here are my design Ideas for the Ocean Giants publication. I started of using simple vector shapes but I realised that a real BBC book would use this style and I went on to use photography with subtle use of type. I think the designs towards the end work better with the amazing image of the humpback. I think the white space helps complement the vivid blue and also is consistent with the generous white space through out the book.

Chapter One
Chapter one so far. amendments to the type and image hierarchy and also the info graphics are inside.
Size info graphic
The comparison to the bus wasn't working so I thought I would compare it to another big animal which people always think of being big which is a Great white Shark. I also added humans holding hands to show how long a blue whale is. Also added the weight aspect to the info graphic to give more of a comparison of their size.
Age Info graphic
After producing the info graphic I thought that it needed something more. So I decided to show how long 200 years is through a time line of what a bowhead alive today would of lived through. Showing specific dates to really communicate the their lengthy life span
Time line at bottom.

Mock up
I printed out the layout I had for the first chapter and things which I realised is that I need to sort out the hierarchy of images on some pages and also make the type smaller to give more negative space which will give the book more of a contemporary feel Im going for and also which the older audience will appreciate more.
