Yearbook Boards

Brief 2 - Yearbook Evaluation

This brief was the most time consuming of the lot as you had to speak to everyone, chase up people for files and information and organise everything. Because the concept of the yearbook included categorisation of everyones work it made for a more complicated method of gathering and photographing everyones work. But it was worth it because the final piece has worked out very well and is different to any other yearbook produced. Through this brief I have learnt so much about photography. We did two main shoots. The portrait and the work shoots. Through both I have gained an invaluable amount of knowledge about lighting, set ups, photo editing, cameras and how to arrange compositions to create great photos. For the first time in a collaboration I am 100% happy with the resolution. I think everyone gave something to the group making it a fun and productive collaboration. There should of been more of a dialogue with the tutors about concepts and design ideas which is something that we could of worked on better as sometimes I think because there was a constant discussion between the design team we assumed/forget to tell others.

Board Tests

Printed out the boards in B&W as a test to see what changes I needed to do. It helped as I made some changes.

Layout

Thumbs of the layout so far. We did some rearrangement and made notes where we need to crop and put certain information.

After a crit we had we decided to crop closer to diffuse the grey a bit. Add red end papers to introduce the secondary colour a bit more. Make Visiting teachers type red for same reason.

Photography

We had a extremely long 3 days (plus more) of photography. The photos turn out really well.

THANK YOU TO MARK AND FIA WHO HELPED US MAKE RAD PHOTOS

We experimented with lighting, boom arms, layout and composition. But we had a few different techniques. Top down (above),  angled and against a wall.

Placement Logos

I have been in charge of chasing up everyone for their placement logos which CAN be very time consuming. I have almost got all of them. The old lay out looking to much like 'TK. MAXX' so we decided to pu the logos into a grid and play around with the size.

Came up with an idea to arrange the logos leaving a space in the middle much in the same way as the gallery page.

Colours

Tutors pages, because the main 3 tutors are red on orange we thought that we should switch it up to show a difference.
Here are some examples, we decided that red on white worked best though

VP Page

Decided that there might be to much orange so we inverted the colours for the VP pages

Visiting Professionals

For the VP pages we sent out forms asking 4 questions, what does the ideal student need, Why do you love design, Three words to describe your time on the course and what inspires you.

Visiting Peeps

I was in charge of scanning in all the signatures, organising and giving them colour.

Hand writing

To communicate a sense of personality and interaction of the course we thought of having the tutors write down their name in their hand writing. It shows more personality rather than a typeface. We thought the red really popped from the orange and the double page spread of this would look sick.

Then we decided that we could use the hand writing idea for everyone in the yearbook. Below are all the students.

Placement page

A double page spread of all the companies logos were people have done placements. This would show how the students get out into the industry and also show of the companies and studios to an extent. We need to get everyone to get Ai. or Jpeg files from the companies.

Organisation Station

We organised everyones submission proposal sheets for the year book. We then went through all of them and put them into the croups that best represented their work. Then made a list of what projects with in everyones proposals would work best in the showcase and individual pages. Now we are in the process of speaking to everyone individually to clarify what we aim to do and confirm what they want in the year book and what we need from them. LONG........ but good to speak to everyone so they are all happy with the end product. Feed back was good from the categorisation Idea and also the gallery page.

Select spreads in colour.

Gallery

Here is the layout idea for the gallery page. The photos we took are arranged so that everyone is interacting with each other. Looking, smiling and animated. The way of interaction makes the page interesting to look at because people spend longer looking at how everyone is different rather than straight faces.

Cover

The white lines on top right reflect the categories that will be on everyones pages. Things to consider for front cover - Maybe a spot UV where the orange is.
Front, back and tabs with categories.

VP page and KEY.

These 2 layouts for Visiting Professionals (VPs) page shows an idea that we had during our last meeting. Pictures of some VPs and a quote on a double page spread. Colours from the KEY could be used. Although still needs tweeking. The way how the quote is layed out doesn't work that well.

The tabs on the front cover would be used as the key. Putting the tabs next to an student showcase page and comparing the key to the colours on their page would give you an idea of what their niche is with out being to in your face.
