Penguin Boards

Brief 5 - Penguin Evaluation

I think the final resolution worked well for this brief. I think the concept of the design was well considered as I actually read the book so I had a real knowledge for the characters and feel of the book. The colour palette I used worked well and I think is something that I sometimes don't spend long enough thinking/experimenting enough on. But this brief the colours complemented the design and story. Unfortunately I wasn't a winner of the brief. I think I over looked the fact that penguin books love a more of a worn and hand made look to their book covers where mine was very clean cut and vector based.

Typeface

As part of my penguin brief I thought I would develop and produce a whole type face which I used on the cover of Cuckoos nest. I think its a the type face isn't one that could be used a lot in the real world but for the purpose of the book cover I think it communicates the right message.

Book Mark Designs

Designing book marks. I added a quote from McMurphy which I think works. The ones with just the cogs I think would look good as a book mark.

Submission Cover

I went with the yellow cover with the orange type. I am happy with the cover. I think it communicates the book and the type works well with the imagery.

Final Cover Ideas

The colours below (apart from the red) I think are working. I added a doorway behind the Chief to represent a hallway and adding marks up the wall communicates a corridor. I think the water dripping down the front works with showing the 'inner workings' of the hospital. I cant decide between the brown and blue and the yellow. Yellow is the colour of madness and It does create a more vibrant and visually appealing front cover.

The spanner with in the cogs represents McMurphy who in the book is the spanner in the works of the hospital. He riles up Ratchet and switches things up in the hospital.

Corridor

I thought using windows to make the hallway seem more legit. But It made the design a bit too busy. I think using a shadow may be a way of subtly showing an area.

Cuckoo Colours

The design is working, but the colours I am using aren't working that well. I also think I need to develop the hall way to make it seem......more like a hallway.

Cuckoo Cover

Developing the whole cover, back and front. The design develops into using more cogs which I think works well and is visually exciting.

Using this sketch below I had an Idea of showing The Chief  mopping on top and underneath showing all the machinery of the hospital

Cuckoo Ideas 2

Exploring the type face I produced with an Idea I had of using a Cog and an eye communicating the machine of the hospital with the Nurse looking over the patients.

Type For Cuckoo

Looking at type that isn't too straight, also looking at different sizes to make it seem a bit 'all over the place' I then produced my own typeface and again made it seem a bit squewiff.  I think the type face I produced works well.

Cuckoo Ideas

Starting to design the cover. I was thinking of trying to have big simple shapes on cover. But after doing some designs I think there should be more detail which will make the design POP.

Hand Type

Did some hand drawn type for the cover. I think a font that is a bit messy will communicate the madness of the characters in the book.

Idea Sketches

Developing composition of front cover. I think that The Chief should be the main character on the front cover. Also cogs should be involved as the Chief hallucinates machinery etc.

Initial Sketches

Couple of initial sketches. First one revolving round the Chief as the book is written from his prespective. The other from behind of Nurse Ratchets legs showing her dominance over the patients.
